Wednesday Rants: May 2016 Edition

Greetings Fellow Readers! Welcome to another round of ranting. 'Arcana Magi' Season 6 is nearing its end, Splatterbomb™ has reached its next chapter, and a new tabletop game is ready to be talked about. So let's get ranting.

[Arcana Magi Universe]

Okay, so I'm sure many of you have read the previous chapters and are screaming - "MORE NEW ENEMIES?!". Well this is part of a big plan that I had been working on when I decided to make multiple universes. I wasn't sure how long this was going to take or when I should bring it to light without ruining the other stories. However, my mistakes in 'Memorial Vol. 6', didn't force my hand per se, it more or less told me the time is now before everything falls apart. These new villains also tie into the Arcana Magi Deck Building Game that I am currently working on. Now if you feel skeptical about this being a big plan, you only have to look at the 'Arcana Magi' novel in the Suzaku Universe where I planted the seeds, but needed time to grow and cultivate. I don't want to say anything more, lest I risk ruining the stories, but the final 2 chapters will answer some stuff that has been going on and prep the Universe up for Season 7 this October.

As for the Deck Building Game...

[New Tabletop Game]

So, Arcana Magi the Deck Building Game is still in development, however, because I had little knowledge of the Deck Building Games when I started development, I found myself overwhelmed and overthinking. So, I took a step back and decided to start basic.

Introducing...

The Savage Strikers: The Deck Building Game.

This was a game I fell back on to understand how to develop a Deck Building Game. It is a tournament fighting game where you choose 1 of 9 fighters to take on your opponent and deplete the health to knock them out. some elements that I developed in 'Arcana Magi Deck Building Game', found its way into the 'Savage Strikers', however, new elements that was developed in the 'Savage Strikers' are going to find their way into 'Arcana Magi'. If that makes any sense at all. Pretty what I am learning in developing the 'Savage Strikers' are going to help in the development of 'Arcana Magi'. At first I thought about making 'Arcana Magi' an expansion to the 'Savage Strikers' ala crossover, but I decided to let it be it's own Deck Building Game. Proof of Concepts show that it is possible, but it will take longer compared to how fast I got 'Savage Strikers' done this year.

As for the Savage Strikers itself. The game is almost ready for submission process. I am just dealing with balancing issues in playtesting, but I will be formally announcing all playtest events that Savage Strikers will appear in.

[Splatterbomb™]

'Splatterbomb' is in submission stages now. Playtesting is still ongoing to deal with card text balance, but that's about it. The game last 30-45 mins and has been working on all cylinders. Since I am in submission stages, all new T-Shirts will be put on hold until results are in. You can still purchase T-Shirts at Spreadshirt.com and grab a copy of 'Peanut Butter Jelly (Spaltterbomb™ Theme)' at iTunes or Amazon.

[Vacation]

So this June, I am taking a month long vacation, only focusing on 'Splatterbomb', 'The Savage Strikers', and 'Arcana Magi: Deck Building Game' development. There will be no 'NEWS and NOTES', 'Wednesday Rants', releases, or public announcements. This whole year is going to be hectic with trying to get 'Splatterbomb' published and developing the 'Savage Strikers' and 'Arcana Magi', I'll need as much focus as possible.

I will return on July 11 with 'NEWS and NOTES' since Independence Day falls on the first Monday of the Month. I will post a Twitter announcement if there is any Playtest Events in the first week of July from the 4th to the 9th.

So please enjoy the last two chapters of 'Arcana Magi Zero'. I hope they will get you all hyped for Season 7 this October. Thank you all for your patience with what happened in 'Memorial' and sticking with me through 'Zero'.

Until Next July...

See ya.

Wednesday Rants: April 2016 Edition

Greeting Fellow Readers! Welcome to an early edition of the Wednesday Rants, due to a schedule meeting tonight. The last leg of 'Arcana Magi' Season is underway and I do have to address what happened last month, so let us begin.

[Arcana Magi Memorial]

I really forgot to talk about this in the last rants and I didn't even realize this. What I was supposed to talk about last month was that I was not going to be able to end the series as planned. When I did the outline for the upcoming chapters, I realized the series was dragging on and that I could not end the story abruptly, leaving unresolved stuff in the story. Because I failed to talk about this in the last Rants, my decision came off haphazard and inexperienced. It also didn't help when decisions in the previous volumes came back to haunt me in the last volume. As I have said before a long time ago, Fictionaut is usually treated as my training ground to learn about writing and improve my skills. It seems I really do have a lot more to learn than ever.

I apologize to all of you who was anticipating the conclusion to this long series, especially after all these years. I will end the series next season, now that I got everything in place. So please join me next season to help end the series on a strong note.

[Arcana Magi Universe]

So, 'Arcana Magi Zero's' 2nd Arc is underway. I chose Arc instead Volume because I already used that for the short stories. Please bear in mind I did not have planned to make Arcana Magi this big when I first wrote the original Shorts Stories. I am looking to see if I can tie the universe up with the Deck Building Card Game that I am currently working. It should not be difficult, I already have an idea how to link it all together. Chapter 2 is next Friday at 10 PM EST on Fictionaut.

As for the game itself, I got good a Proof of Concept first look at the game last month. However, I am also creating another Deck Building Game and I took some of the concepts from Arcana Magi and applied it into this game. I am considering whether to implement Arcana Magi into this game's system or let Arcana Magi be its own game. But, considering that I have taken game mechanics from Arcana Magi and put into this current game, it might seem more logical to put Arcana Magi as an expansion to that game instead of being on its own. I'll see more as game development moves along.

[Splatterbomb™]

Development is nearing its end. At this point I am assigning scores to cards and taking a preliminary look at some publishers. I have not decided yet who I will submit to. I am hoping to begin submissions in May. However, once I make the submission, I will be going dark regarding the game for legal and business reasons. So what am I going to do once that is taken care of?

Well I will working on some small proof of concepts videos, probably only 1, and post that up on my Studio Coqui Youtube channel. I am doing research on some things before I can start working on this little Splatterbomb Project. It may not be much, but I hope it generates some fun upon viewing.

The Splatterbomb T-Shirts are going to continue to be put on hold until I settle the board game down. I do need to update the description section and implement some lore for the characters and items.

I will probably look into doing some Splatterbomb stories for Kindle. That's on the list but not moving up on said list right now. That decision will come later this year.

[Other Thoughts]

There will be another playtest this Saturday at Whole Food Tribeca starting at Noon. Please join all of us local game developers as we continue to showcase and playtest all of game designs.

I May take Summer break this June for the entire month. Which means no 'NEWS and NOTES' or 'Wednesday Rants'. It all hinges what happens next month in May, which I will announce in next months Wednesday Rants.

That's all the thoughts I have for this month. I thank you all for listening to my Rants.

Until next time...
See ya.

Wednesday Rants: March 2016 Edition

Greetings Fellow Readers! Welcome to another round of random ranting. I have an extremely important thing to discuss to kick thing off. So let's being.

[Arcana Magi Memorial Vol. 4 and Vol. 6 Problem]

For those of you who read the Vol.6-c.3, you may have noticed something familiar in the final scene...

...and the answer is yes, I did copy past the opening scene in Volume 4 and pasted it to the final scene in Vol.6-c.3.

The reason why I did this, I'll have to put into context first a quick thing in the past. If you have read any of my 'Thoughts on Writing' or earlier 'Rants' from years ago, (the articles are still here) I've made very clear that 'Arcana Magi' is more of my training story to experiment, learn and improve on writing. That has never changed to this day. So 2 years ago, in Vol.4, I decided to try the storytelling approach of opening with a future-sight, then roll back the story "3Weeks Earlier". What I did not expect was how long it would take me to get that opening point. I just reached it in Vol.6, plus a lot of time has past in-story. Not only that, but over these past 2 years as I continued writing, I felt the whole "3 Weeks Earlier" mechanic was not very good as a method of storytelling, plus I sacrificed a very powerful scene very early. I should have built towards what was in Vol.6-c.3 organically.

So, I have decided that when I do the rewrites later this year, I am going to remove that scene from Vol.4 all together, and for now, have that scene sit where it belongs. This is a good learning experience for me and I learned that it is better for me to build towards a powerful scene instead of trying to be flowery and cute with it.

I apologize for the inconvenience.

[Arcana Magi Game]

The Arcana Magi Deck Building Game is currently in proof of concept stages now. The original plan for the game's design was not fun to play with and I had to scrap it before I blew my brain apart. Originally it was going to be a pure Co-op game with an "A.I." opponent but after playing some Deck Building Games with this type of mechanic as part of my research, I felt it did not fit into 'Arcana Magi' the way I envisioned it. So I am now redesigning the game to be versus Deck Building Game with up to 4 players. However, the ideas I have for the game mechanics - and the sheer size of the game - has prompted me to develop a different deck building game using a couple of 'Arcana Magi's' game mechanics. Keep in mind that I am using over 6 seasons worth of stories into this game and make sure it all fits into the context of the story as well. This other deck building I am working will serve as a base template and learning tool to improve upon Arcana Magi and make it the deck building game that I want it to be. It's not that major of a setback, but the deck building game genre is a very dense pool publishing wise. There are tons of this stuff and only a select few are considered really big. I want 'Arcana Magi' to set itself apart from the Dominion and Star Realm clones and be its own unique game.

[Splatterbomb]

No you may have noticed in the 'NEWS and NOTES' that there is no T-Shirts being released this month. Well the game's card lore has changed. There are Items and Characters but their titles are adapting to the growing changes of the cards as I near the end of development. The "End Game' where the final round takes place and a winner is decided has gained momentum, but there is always a small snag that is keeping it from being a complete game. The problem is that game ends with Player 1 always winning 99% of the time. So the cards where the Items and Character are used in, keep changing as a result. So I decided to but stay on the T-Shirts until the cards are perfected and the prints can reflect what is on the cards. Chances are that when that is all done, I will be updating the shirt prit to reflect the new changes. It may not be much, but the context is what is changing drastically.

Also, there will be another NYC-Playtest Session this Saturday at Brooklyn Game Lab in Brooklyn New York for those of you interested in playtesting tabletop games currently in development. I will be bringing Splatterbomb and the new deck building game I am working.

Make sure to swing over to iTunes or Amazon.com and grab yourself a copy of 'Peanut Butter Jelly [Splatterbomb Theme]'.

So that is all I have on my mind right now.

Thank you for listening to my rants.

Until next time...

See ya.
