Wednesday Rants: November 27, 2013

Greetings Fellow Readers! Welcome to another round of random ranting. Did you all enjoyed 'Arcana Magi Memorial Vol.4'? The setup is complete and next will be an awesome adventure. Today though, I will be addressing upcoming plans so let us begin.

[December/January

I will be taking a 2 month winter break. I will be in total silence, which there are no Wednesday Rants, no new Fictionaut stories, nothing. I will be spending the next 2 months 3rd drafting this novel of mine that i want to put in a publishing houses' hands. Plus the holidays are here and I have a lot of priorities to focus on. So I will not be able to keep up with any online activities.]

[Arcana Magi Pure Vol.4

I will return in February and will definitely start it off February 7, 2014 Friday, with the first chapter. This will close out an abbreviated Season 4 for Arcana Magi Universe. I look forward to seeing you all then of course.]

[3rd draft Novel

Okay, so the title of this novel is Dreamwalker Kumiko. It is one my first early written novels going 13 years. It is a very big story, Urban Fantasy, and plenty of awesomeness. It is also my most difficult to write due to the ending. I am still finding that right one. Basically, this draft is going to be completely re-written to meet my current standards of writing. I also have lot of issues to address, like fridge logic, plot holes, and missed opportunities. I don't how much of this I will get in 2 months time because of Life, but I definitely need all the energy and concentration to do this. I really am looking foward to getting this published in-house and onto store shelves, and once that happens, I hope you will all get your copy and enjoy reading in bed at night.]

[Board Games

Everything is pacing along great on this front. Playtesting at IGDA Game Demo night net positive results and required minimal removal of game mechanics. I will be nitpicking during the next 2 months when I have time outside of Dreamwalker Kumiko, and hopefully I will get picked up by a game publisher. I do want to due another Prototype Presentation, but that will probably be after Arcana Magi Season 4 is finished, and if I did not get picked up by publisher then. But that is on tap for 2014.]

So those are my upcoming plans. I thank you all for wonderful 2013. I really appreciated your viewing all my works on Fictionaut, Youtube, and Kindle. I look forward to seeing you all again in 2014.

Have wonderful and safe happy holidays.

Until 2014...

See ya.

Wednesday Rants: November 13, 2012

Greetings Fellow Readers! Welcome back for another round of Wednesday ranting. Honestly, I really did not prepare a rant this week. So much has been going on around me since New York Comic-Con that I really don't have anything in mind to talk about.

Well, I guess I can talk about last night. Well I demonstrated my board game Artemis Neo: Battle of Kendel's Den. It is set after the events of 'Artemis Neo' that I released on Fictionaut and later on Kindle in 'Duality of Science'. It is straight up space combat, just eliminate the opponent's fleet first to win. Well the good news is that the game works, but with flaws. Mainly due to the die roll's probability. Artemis Neo did meet great praises. The people who played it had fun and offered their feedback and what they thought would make the game better. It was very eventful and I walked away from it surprised that the game turned out great.

So I spent most of today improving the game. I wouldn't say it's a overhaul, I only eliminated just one rule and adjusted the other. The rest are additions that expanded the game. Once I get a chance at playtesting it again next month, hopefully, I can then take it to the next level and seek a publisher.

Overall I am excited that I got this to work and people enjoyed. I am very happy that I got a good game made. The same can be said for Eivo, nothing in that game got eliminated and it was mostly adjusting and addition. So I pretty have 2 working board games that just need one more playthrough before taking out to the market submissions.

I hope you all are enjoying 'Arcana Magi Memorial Vol.4'. I feel I am getting the hang of writing 5 page chapters, but honestly I feel I could do more. Either way this week's chapter will be exciting, and then I'll be winding down in chapter 5. 'Arcana Magi Pure Vol. 4' will happen around January/February to round out 'Arcana Magi Season 4'.

I intend to take a total break in December so I can work on an novel of mine I had been working on since 2001. I really have put off third drafting this story, which really needs it, but it is a good thing because if I submitted as it is, I would not picked up. I've already outlined what need to be fixed, added, covered, and so on. So hopefully I'll have it ready sometime around next year and a Publishing house.

So this is what I have in mind for this week. I'll see you all on the 27th for another round of ranting. Have good night.

Until next time...

See ya.

Wednesday Rants: September 25, 2013

Greetings Fellow Readers! Welcome to another round of Wednesday Ranting and it's a beefy one this week. I got some 'Thoughts on Writing' this week and some official announcements. So let us begin.

[Thoughts on Writing: The Strength of a Writer]

What is the strength of a writer? I had thought about this rather quickly, and honestly, I do not know where I will be at in the future regarding this question. For now, though, these are my current answers to this question.

Confidence. When I write, I have to sound like what I say on paper is strong. That the point I am making or the situation the characters go through does not sound weak. What I convey is done with a smile that I know what I am talking about. That if any of you can feel that confidence in how I present my story, then my strength can be seen clearly. Not just in how writing looks but in my voice amongst the narrative. I have to be sure of myself when writing the things I write and not be too scared to express it. There are a lot of thins I have written between Fictionaut and Kindle that if I did not feel confident of what I want to get across, I could end up discrediting myself as a writer or lose my readers altogether.

Competence. I feel it is very important then when I introduce things in a story, I know what I am talking about. Research into things like motorcycle engines that I used in Artemis Neo, and kinetic and potential energy which I used in Arcana Magi, are really helpful in writing. I may not have a science major when talking about technology but a little research allows readers to know that I at least took the time to understand things. Yeah with Science Fiction and Fantasy I am given a leeway to bend the rules to make things look cool, like sound in space, but that is not a license to dismiss the logic of the world. Rulemaking is also important. To stay consistent as thoroughly as possible is very important. Breaking the rules of the world you wrote will make you look incompetent as storyteller.

Comprehension. Look, I admit that I am not A+ on my grammar, but the least I can do is make my writings comprehensible. The simplest of writing, the Basics as I see it, is "The cat ran home." Even if I wrote that in my story, it's comprehensible. Could it be better than that as a sentence? Yes, and it should be, but I should not try to be so flowery with my writings that it reaches the point of incomprehension. When people read my writing, they expect me, as an author to have modicum of intelligence. If writing a sentence like "The cat ran home" allows me to come off as being comprehensible to my readers at the expense of poetry, that sentence will trump poetry all the time. That does not mean I should always write like that, but i should allow my readers to at least keep up with what I saying in text and not lose them in the narrative.

Overall, writing is not easy. It is difficult and it is challenging. The rewards are very high when one thinks about that fact that they actually created something they call their own invention. But what happens afterwards is as good as anybody's guess. As long as my writing feels Confident, looks Competent, and is Comprehensible to read, I believe my works will look strong, and I can become a strong writer, like I should be.

[New York Comic Con 2013]

I will be wandering the halls of the Jacob Javits Center. I acquired a Pro Badge this year thanks to 'The Impossible Man on Kindle', so I will be attending for 4 days instead of 3. Feel free to say hi, I am not afraid to shake hands and take a picture. Unfotunately I could build on my novels release because I was too late to Book anything up with the Convention like Panels or Autograph sessions. But I am looking forward to being there once again.

[No Wednesday Rants in October]

Due to New York Comic Con there will be no Wednesday Rants throughout the month. Wednesday Rants will return in November.

[NEWS and NOTES]

Because October is an off month, the first Monday of October is on the 7th. That will be when 'NEWS and NOTES' will be posted and the Facebook Events schedule will be updated.

[The Impossible Man on Kindle Update]

I will be updating 'The Impossible Man on Kindle' to do some extensive cleanup. I apologize for any inconvenience in my writing. I will post up when the update is available so you all can update your copies.

Thank you all for listening to my rants this week. next month is indeed a big month and I look forward to seeing you all on October 7th with the 'NEWS and NOTES' October Edition.

Until Next Time...

See ya.

Wednesday Rants: September 11, 2013

Greetings Fellow Readers! Welcome to another round of random ranting. This week I will be following up the last 'Thoughts on Writing' segment with this week's talk on 'The Way of the Writer'. So without further hesitation let us begin.

[Thoughts on Writing-The Way of the Writer

In my first year on Fictionaut, there was a forum post asking what we writers thought about writing. My answer was just straightforward.

We have something to say.
We have ideas to share.
We have information to relay.
We want to communicate.

I added that to my 'Why do you write?' of my Fictionaut profile and kind of left it there. But what did I mean by all of that. Well I took the time reflect on it since I said it with no rhyme or reason and I feel I could share this with all of you.

1- We have something to say.

One of things that make storytelling, throughout all media, is that there is underlying message or metaphor or allegory, just something there that grabs a persons attention. Historically speaking, many stories were written in certain ways to avoid things like imprisonment for speaking out against a government, or exploring a taboo. These are the thing that make people think, but it would never happen, if the storyteller had nothing to say. In all writings, regardless of quality, have this in common; the writer has something to say. Whether its comedy, or warning us about the dangers of damaging the environment, or challenging social norms, the writer is telling the story because he has something to say about it. It doesn't matter whether the reader agrees or not, or decides to scream controversy. It something the author saw that felt needed to be shared. It can have entertainment value, it can be hidden messages like in Grimms tales, but no matter what, the author is writing because they want to say something to someone, for better or for worse.

2- We have ideas to share.

One of the beauties of Science Fiction are the ideas of technology that come out of it. Many Sci-Fi writers in the 1800s had ideas of traveling through space, or using new types of weaponry to fight aliens, or building a new mode of transportation that benefits mankind. Ideas are not just relegated to Sci-Fi of course, many traditional fiction set in present eras of the time shared ideas from politics, to business, to schooling. Many writers have ideas that can be mind-blowing, make us think twice about the way we act as society, or the potential to improve society. Writing brings forth ideas for everyone.

3- We have information to relay.

Sometimes, we as a society act in our nature to ignore things, or be ignorant of what is happening around us. Sometimes it information that is not relevant to our situation, like computers. Sometimes it could be an issue that has nothing to with us. But the thing about writing is the author learned of something, saw something, had a conversation about something that could be informative and is not readily available. Whether fiction or non-fiction, writers convey the information they learn to the general public and let us know when something good is happening, or something bad is happening, and no one is aware of it. Just think of how many laws came into being, how companies changed their rules, and how many everyday people changed their lives around because of the writings they read. All because information was provided to the reader at their finger tips.

4- We want to communicate.

I read in one of the books, which I am sorry the title escapes me, while I was learning to improve my writing where the author asked a student a key thing to writing. The answer was communication. I found that interesting because communication has many forms but served one unifying purpose, to get us to talk to each other. Let me put it like this, there is a book about vampires that made a lot of money while simultaneously triggered vitriolic hate. Despite the panning, it did one thing amazingly, it got people to talk to each other. See, we human beings, well... we really need to talk to each other more often, and its very easy to do but somehow difficult. Writing is a good way to at least get us to talk to each other. Be it fun, informative, or fan-biased, storytelling allows readers the ability and freedom to provide feedback to each other on what they thought. It brings a person's characteristics and helps bring people together, or at least an understanding. The freedom to agree or disagree, or agree to disagree. But the underlying objective is to get people to talk to each other, because talking is good.]

So this ends another session of 'Thoughts on Writing'. I thank you all for joining and look forward the next session in two weeks. Free 'Shell' Friday is this week and falls on a very creepy date for all you Horror. Enjoy.

Until Next Time...
See ya.

Wednesday Rants: August 28, 2013

Greetings Fellow Readers! Welcome to another round of random ranting. Today, I'll holding another 'Thoughts on Writing' session. The next three sessions, I will talking about the three things you may have seen on Fictionaut Profile Page; My Mantra, The Way of The Writer, and The Strength of a Writer. These may be very brief and short. Again, these are only my thoughts and not an absolute or a governing rule. My thoughts are subject to change as time rolls on and new things occur around me in my everyday life. So let us begin.

[Thoughts on Writing: My Mantra

This was the first thing I wrote in my profile page on Fictionaut. It kind of just came to me based on my experiences in learning how to right. I try my best to live up to my mantra, but I still feel I have along way to go to become a strong skilled writer.

-I write for everyone to read and enjoy.

While although many readers have particular tastes, that doesn't automatically mean I should exlude them from reading my story. The objective is to make sure my writings, no matter how quirky, or niche, I want these stories to be read by everyone. It is very important to me to make sure that my stories are accesible to everyone. Even if in the end they don't understand the stories, what's important is that did read it.

Most importantly, I have to make sure it is enjoyable. Reading is suppose to be fun, intriguing, and griping at times, but if readers do not come out of the story entertained and felt a level of enjoyment, then I know my writing is terrible. It is very important to bring our the joy in writing.

-I write to train hard to be a good author.

I am not a good writer, even if critics and fans say the contrary. I am always, ALWAYS, training, practicing, learning to be a good writer. Part of that is never stop writing, and I never will. If the accolades or the fortune and glory happens, then so be it. It still does not change the fact that I need to keep training harder to be a good writer. To never quit and have fun writing a wonderful creation.

- I write so I can learn the Art of Foreshadow.

How love how Foreshadowing works. All the intrigue and level captivation that can bring readers into the story. It is a double-edge sword, but it brings about a great challenge in writing. This is something I want to accomplish as a writer. The art behind this technique brings out its intricacies and flesh it out in a way that makes the story so complete and exciting. It can make the narrative all the more rewarding when the imagination springs forth in the readers mind as story goes in another unexpected direction. Using this technique to draw in my readers and put smiles on their faces when the reveal happens. This is part of my training as an author and I know I will succeed in using this.]

So those are my Thought on Writing, very brief and to the point. Part 2 will be about The Way of the Writer. I thank you all for listening to my rants. Quick Notes will be this Friday.

Until Next Time...

See ya

Wednesday, August 14, 2013

Wednesday Rants: August 14, 2013

Greetings Fellow Readers! Welcome to another round of random ranting. Today I'll be addressing a couple of things that have occurred over the past week. This will be a short session, so let's begin.

[Fictionaut Private Mode]

As you all may have read in the my Facebook Event Planner, I am going to set The Impossible Man, Beyond Logic A Matter of Time and The First Run in Private Mode this Friday. The set to Private Mode will be at 8:00 PM EST.

Now as I have discussed last month, real life is not playing favorites for me and I have to earn and income. I was going to have to make some hard decisions with my works, especially on Fictionaut and this is one of them. Now Private Mode basically means you have to be a Fictionaut Member in order to read a story by a Fictionaut writer. So if you are not part of Fictionaut, you won't get to read these three stories.

Now to be fair, The Impossible Man on Fictionaut remains untouched and is in its 2010 release version. Which means that the scenes that I added into the Kindle version as well as any editing I did are not present. In essence the Fictionaut version is the inferior and the Kindle version is the superior. I decided to set to private mode for three reasons. 1) Posterity, a great opportunity for people to see the evolution of book writing. 2) Not to mislead people in thinking the Fictionaut version is the same exact Kindle version. 3) Publicity. I do not want to confuse the media that I am trying to connect with or get caught in an unnecessary controversy. setting to Private Mode feels the lesser of two controversies.

Please try to understand, if I had a more favorable luck on my side, I would totally keep everything status quo, but life does not play favorites and I have to make something of myself and my works. I thank you all for you understanding and support.

[Thought on Writing]

I have a few topics in mind, I might make it a 2-parter or something, but next Rants I totally am going to a new subject on Thought on Writing. So make sure to join me then.

[New York Comic-Con 2013]

Yes I am heading back to the con in the Jacob Javits Center in New York City. This time with a Pro Badge. Thanks to the release of The Impossible Man, I qualified for 4-Day Professional Badge. However, I still haven't finalized my schedule since the Con also falls on Thursday and Friday and the future is uncertain. What do I have planned? I do not know yet, because I still haven't found out what a Pro-Badge will do for other than going to Professional Areas. But NYCC is in October and this is August, so there are plenty of time to get things together. So stay tuned on future developments.

Well that's all I have on my mind. I thank you for listening to my rant and I will see you next session.

Until next time...

See ya.

I decided to try what I felt was meeting halfway by letting Artemis Neo and Beyond Logic: The Jury of My Peers to remain unlock only because they are one half of a dual set released on Kindle. The prices on Kindle is $.99 for this purpose and will not see any price hikes for Duality of Science and Beyond Logic Vol. 1.

I am giving all of you all an 11 day notice if you wish read or finish up reading where you are at, but unless you are a Fictionaut Member, you will have to purchase a copy on Kindle to read the stories set to Private Mode. The other coice would have been to remove them from Fictionaut altogether meaning deleting them from the website, and I really did not want to do that after all these years.

Again, I am sorry if you feel it is unfair, but life is not giving me a fair shake and I have to make that fair shake with my own two hands somehow. The stories are still available for reading, you just have to join Fictionaut to get to them.

I thank you for your understanding and patience, and I hope you continue your patronage of my works now and in the future.

Wednesday Rants: July 24, 2013

Greetings Fellow Readers! Welcome to another edition of Wednesday Rants. It's Kindle publishing week are you all excited? I am very anxious. Since I am still working on 'The Impossible Man' Kindle Edition, this will be a brief rant, so I'll keep it short as status updates.

[The Impossible Man on Kindle

Everything is coming along fine. One of the scenes that I re-inserted was very tricky because the entire chapter was completely altered when I wrote for Fictionaut, but with a little surgery, I was able to re-insert it without damaging the story. A Little proofreading and it will be fine. Any other re-insertions may be last minute, but I gotta be careful not to ruin the overall story with them.

I successfully redid the opening, now it looks more inviting. Also the ending was very easy to fix. It took a simple omission of lines and now the character in question doesn't feel derailed.

I'm now adding *** for scene breakage for easy reading.

Doing little tweaks here and there for consistency.

The cover is a little harder than I expected. It may not come out pretty, but at least this novel will have a cover unlike the others.

Keep in mind that it will take 24 hours before Amazon publishes it onto Kindle and at least 48 hours for the cover, so I won't announce at any fixed time, just keep an out on Twitter or Facebook for the link.]

[Free 'Shell' Friday

Also a reminder that Free 'Shell' Friday is also this week during the release of 'The Impossible Man' on Kindle. So make sure to grab a free copy alongside 'The Impossible Man'.]

[New YouTube Show

I am thinking about starting a new show series chronicling my board/card games next month. I have not decided and will not post them up on Facebook Event Planner. The decision will most likely be last minute. So I'll keep you posted.]

That is all I have on my mind today. Thank you all for listening to my rants. See you all Friday.

Until Next Time...

See Ya.

Wednesday Rants: July 10, 2013

Greetings Fellow Readers! Welcome to another round of the once again renamed Wednesday Rants, which sounds a lot better then Bi-Monthly Rants. Today I am going to talk about 'The Impossible Man on Kindle', and why this must be done. Just to quick note for those who missed out last June, on the sidebar link under 'Beyond Logic' is a new short story, 'The Spectral Line' now available on Fictionaut. Click on the link and enjoy the ride. Now for the rants.

[The Impossible Man on Kindle

This was a decision I did not take lightly. For one, as a novel, I sacrificed its Publishing potential, anmd posting it on Fictionaut, was mainly because I felt that the window in which this story was themed on, Japanese Culture, had closed. It was not easy to make, but I did not want to see my novel rot inside my computer for no one to read either. Posting it up for free and not try to make a nominal income to pay my bills was very risky. I had hoped that by posting 'The Impossible Man' on Fictionaut, I can draw a little attention to the small publishers that frequent Fictionaut. Unfortunately, I also have a lot of things on my plate here in the real world.

One of those is employment. Even if I did succeed in getting 'The Impossible Man' published by a House, I would still have to get a job, since big sale are not guaranteed, and that is understandable. Yet, as you all have seen from our economy, it is crap, and very hard for me to find a everyday 9 to 5 M-F job. If I go into retail, then I have to deal with unpredictable hours, as well as the insane stress working at retail brings, and it will hinder my ability to write or create things. I have suffered physically from this before.

Which brings me back to 'The Impossible Man'. I'm putting it on Kindle so I can try to get some sales. Maybe not a lot, but enough, and hopefully I can push it hard enough to make it popular. The only drawback is that it is a self-published book, and not one to really ride on when I start pitching query letter for my other Novel that I never released on Fictionaut. It was written one year before 'The Impossible Man', but there are still some kinks and grammar to touch up, before I begin querying.

So what to expect from 'The Impossible Man on Kindle'?

1 - The return of a couple of deleted scenes that I removed to reduce the overwhelming size of 'The Impossible Man' on Fictionaut. That wall of text. As you have seen, it did not work out as planned.

2 - As always, grammar and spelling, plus the return of quotation marks.

3 - The opening monologue in Episode 1 will be changed to be a little more inviting and friendly.

4 - The ending will be changed a bit. I feel as though I derailed a couple of characters after I had kind gave them a resolution in previous Episodes.

5 - A few touches here and there for presentation purposes, including a book cover, as soon as I figure out photoshop.

The price right now is yet to be determined. Since it is already on Fictionaut, it will not be this overly expensive novel, however, I am going to set it up in the full lending program and make sure that it will have sales.

So those are the plans for 'The Impossible Man on Kindle'. I'll have ready this month, unless a job happens, then I will announce any necessary changes in the schedule, so that everything I said would go into this edition will be there.

Thank you all for listening to my rant. You all have good week.

Until next time...

See ya.

Bi-Monthly Rants: June 19, 2013

Greetings Fellow readers! Welcome to another round of Bi-Monthly Rants. Are you all excited for next weeks release of 'Beyond Logic' on Fictionaut? To celebrate next weeks release, I am going to share some of my 'Thoughts on Writing'.

[Thoughts on Writing: Female Characters

Okay, this was something that I had on my mind for a long time. The problem is that being male, I don't know what I can say about females when I have never genuinely gone through the experiences of growing up female. There has been, for generations, all kinds of talk about females, from their rights to how they are depicted in fiction. While although I could share my thoughts, I just don't see the point, because other than showing vocal support for females and reject things that harm females, my words don't really matter. My words does not equal action, their just words, words do nothing. But writing is an action, and if there is one place I can, and have been doing my best, to help out females, is in my fiction writing, and hopefully future game inventions. Instead pointing out all the problems and what is wrong with, I will instead talk about what I want in my female characters in all my fiction works. It is a personal risk to make these statements, because I am human and I could accidental trip up and depict females in bad light without realizing it. I'm not looking to win points or curry, I just want an understanding of where I am taking my female characters in my own stories.

Females are Interesting:

Okay let me start with what is important in character development, making characters interesting. Most of my works have female protagonists because I find females interesting. Think of it like this, males in many action/adventure tend to follow the same formula; punch, punch, punch, outwit, shoot, punch. Yeah yeah that's very narrow-minded, but I did grow up in the 80s with all those action flicks around me and the 3rd grade girls in my class had cooties. Today though, I find that even though The Expendables and looking back at Die Hard, yeah its cool but Aliens is Awesome. Sigourney Weaver able to kick ass and still be feminine, the writers (James Cameron, David Glier, and Walter Hill) made Ripley an interesting character. She was an every-woman who rolled her eyes when the corporation did not listen to her about the dangers of the Aliens. What she went through, I don't believe would have been the same if a different character took her place. There is no reason to not make females interesting in fiction and have them face situations that are out of norm. Fiction is a what if scenario and my question is, "What is she going to do to get out of that situation?" That is when I write to answer such a question.

Females are Human:

We males make mistakes, females do too. We males can succeed and fail, females do too. We males try to find the best solution to an impossible puzzle and tha choice may not be the best, females do too. This is something important I try to keep in mind. Females can make mistakes, can succeed and fail, and can persevere in their life. Just like males, females has wants and dreams but also can lose said dreams. These is what make all of us human. I do my best to give my females motivation, drive, and at times they can make mistakes. I have them learn from it and move forward. I may not be perfect in many of my stories, but I at least try to give them respect as humans and get to them to stand up and push back. This isn't about asserting "strong independent woman" here, it's about them struggling to climb a mountain to reach the top and overcoming the trials that they face in the situation they are in.

Females are Different, and that's okay:

This is a tough one, because I always ask myself if it's okay to approach this in my fiction. Things like menstruation, feminine needs, pregnancies, these are things that do occur in every female and we males really don't know how that feels. We really don't. And sadly, there are some adult males who act like its cooties and not something to touch on. It's like "eeww" kind of behavior and as an adult, that's sad, really it is. For me personally, these things are genuinely personal and takes a modicum of understanding when putting it into fiction. However as male I'll really never know. Now granted, it isn't a requirement to depict these needs in every fiction unless it is relevant, but my point is that these needs should NOT be treated as taboo, by both genders. If such situations fit within the narrative, I won't hesitate to throw them in there. Because let's face reality, this is something that happens to females and should not be treated as if it doesn't exist. Yeah readers can assume throughout the story these are happening, but sometimes, these needs can happen when least expected and should never be ignored or poked with a long stick from a distance. It's just matter of asking, "Is this personal moment really necessary?" If the answer is yes, put it in there and stand by it.

Conclusion:

So yeah, it is very difficult to write an interesting female character do to the subjective nature of fiction. Some readers may take offense and other will say this is a great character female character. I can't sway 100% of the reader population. But what I hope is that when I write my female characters, they are interesting, fun, and most importantly, that they be who they are and be judged by the content of their character and merits, and not as a "female tag". What this means is that if a female a makes choice and its wrong choice, I want my readers to say "She was wrong.", not "Girls, am I right?". And I don't want to see my female characters used as a poster child for an agenda either. That is not why I write females for. Females are awesome.

Well I thank you for listening to my rants. I'll see you all next week with "Beyond Logic", and next months 'NEWS and NOTES' will be Monday July 1st at 8:00 PM EST.

Until next time...
See ya.

Bi-Monthly Rants: June 5-6, 2013

Greetings Fellow Readers! I really, really am sorry for missing the scheduled 8:00 release last night. I did not pay attention to the clock and found myself waking up this morning realizing it. I do have a valid reason for missing it and this would be a good opportunity to use that as the focus of today's rants.

[Cyber Tactics®

So yeah last night, I had an idea for some new card designs. This happened during my taping of Prototype Presentations. Now as you know, there currently three type of cards Sprite Programs, Support Files, and System Tools. Where in early prototypes, there were actually five different card types, and one of those I had been tinkering a lot. Either I'd put or take out with each incarnation of the prototype. It's called the Server Board, and originally it did what System Tools does today. But I consolidated them because of redundancy and made it more streamlined.
Now there was another interesting thing I'm trying to tinker with in the game and that is no monetary cards. See in games like Magic: The Gathering and Legend of the Five Rings, they use a monetary system to allow players to place cards from their hands to table. The problem I had was that it was too much of crutch and lacked flexibility. So I never bothered making them. However, some kind of system had to be in place to play cards in order to keep the game balanced. So, I came up with the idea of letting cards pay for each other and not rely on monetary cards.
But, time went on and while this approach does work, I feel like not having monetary cards is the opposite of forcing monetary cards. This was a combination of years of researching game creation from places like Penny Arcade, and extensive playtesting. I came to realize during that recording that I would be cheating players out of something very unique from other cards. Total freedom of creative strategy.
What this means is that by putting in the Server Boards to serve as monetary cards AND keeping the every pays for each other rules, players will be able to freely come up with strategies without the mandatory barrier of having monetary cards in a deck. In other they don;t have play monetary cards if they don't want to. Players can form a deck without Server Boards, or with little Server Boards, or they can rely heavily on it like Magic: the Gathering. Either way, players will have freedom in this game.
Of course there is another bonus to this. I was able to move one of my game mechanics over to Server Boards, because it's nature makes sense. Originally I created three of these cards but because of this change I ended making 4 new additional cards around this game mechanic and it was not easy. It took me all of last night to conjure up these new cards and then strike a balance to keep them from being broken. I also ended up making other new cards for Server Boards expanding on the monetary theme.]

So that is what happened last night and I apologize again for being very late. I am thinking about making a different type of video on YouTube. These videos would be more in depth on all my games and a little more personal then the robotic, sterile sounding Prototype Presentations. I don't know when to begin or how to go about it, but I definately do want to make these videos.

So that's all  have for the rants today. Thank you all for joining me.

Until Next Time...

See ya.

Bi-Monthly Rants: May 22, 2013

Greetings Fellow Readers! Welcome to another round of random ranting. There really is not much for me to talk about this week for now, so this session will be brief.

[Facebook Events Planner]

How is this coming along? Has it been helpful so far? Let me know. For those of you just joining me, I have now started a new Events Planner on Facebook listing all upcoming schedules of story releases, videos, and Kindle sales. It is right here on the sidebar link at the top. This basically replaces my weekly 'NEWS and NOTES' into a monthly posting now. Pretty much all future 'NEW and NOTES' will list what is coming out for the month, then you go to my Event Planer and keep track of all upcoming events from there. This will now minimize the number of postings on Facebook and Twitter, and eliminate redundancy for you convenience. Also this should make it easy for all of you to follow me on Twitter and not get peppered with constant postings in one week. These will be done at the first Monday of every month.

[Weekly Rants]

Well as you can see, I officially renamed the 'Weekly Rants' to 'Bi-Monthly Rants'. It's not spectacular but it makes sense at least.

[You Tube]

I am looking into avenues of my videos to make them into something bigger. But just like Twitter and Facebook, my knowledge is very limited so forgive any type of low quality there may be. I'm also going to look to expand beyond the Presentation aspect and may get into short Demonstration type videos going in depth on gameplay and mechanics. It will be more personal rather than businesslike as in the Presentations. Dates will be posted in a future date so stay tuned.

So that's all I have in mind at this time. Thank you for listening to my rant.

Until Next Time...

See ya.

Weekly Rants: May 8, 2013

Greetings fellow readers! Welcome back to another round of random ranting. I had a very rough April break and hopefully the rest of spring will be kind to me.

[Recap]

The last you all saw me, I got it with a horrific crisis. My computer crashed at the tail end of March just before going into the last week before April break. Well the good news is that I got my computer fixed 2 weeks ago, but it required a whole new hard drive. Thankfully I had most of my stuff backed up, the crucial stuff anyways. So here I am finishing up any last adjustments to the new stuff, which feels weird after so many years, and I'll be ready to go.

[About NEWS and NOTES]

As you may have read in this weeks 'NEWS and NOTES', I was checking out the 'Event' option on Facebook, and I have come to the conclusion that that will be where I will post up all dates for all things I will release. 'NEWS and NOTES' this Monday will be the last the one until the first Monday of June, and the first Monday of every month from here on out. This will make things easier and more convenient and minimize on redundancy. The 'Event Planner' on Facebook will have the Time, Date. and Where these plans will be held. So check in next week on 'NEWS and NOTES' for the first round of dates.

[Prototype Presentations]

Now that my Computer is fixed, I can resume my plan on doing 'Prototype Presentations' on YouTube. These videos will join the rotation on the Event Planner on Facebook, so keep an eye out on the game to be featured.

[Writings]

There will be writings of course, but very few in between on Fictionaut until 'Arcana Magi' Season this Fall. This stories will not be 'Arcana Magi' related as per usual. So stay tuned on it's dates.

[Life]

Yes, life. That thing we all experience outside this internet. I have a lot of important priorities that will keep from releasing things at weekly frequency, especially now with You Tube videos. Those videos are not easy to make especially with outside noise that I cannot control. For now the schedule will be light, but once the real world settles down around me and achieve a routine comfort level, I'll increase the frequency. Hence the Even Planner on Fictionaut. It is not getting any easier out here, and I do need to make money if I want to eat and stay warm. So be ready for any decisions I make that might seem extreme in the coming months.

Well that is all I got to rant about for now. Thank you for listening to my rants and I lok forward to seeing you all next week.

Until Next Time...
See ya.

I want to take a moment and iron out my plans before making any final decisions and directions with all of you. So I look forward to seeing all of you this Wednesday.

Weekly Rants: March 27, 2013

Greetings Fellow Readers! Welcome to another rund of randon rating. This will be the last Weekly Rant and I'll be off the entire month of April for a special hiatus. Let me explain.

Since my teen years, I've been writing and drawing game concepts. In 1996, I attended Digipen Applied Computer Graphics in Vancouver, BC, Canada studying video game design/programming sponsored by Nintendo. Unfortunately, the costs studying abroad was too high and in February 1997 I left Digipen. During this period I continued writing game concepts and eventually I turned to fiction writing.

During my time back from Digipen, I had been playing trading card games like Magic, Pokemon, Battletech, and Legend of the Five Rings. It was in 2004, that I had an idea for a trading card game. I began extensive research on as many trading card games as I could. It was there I developed and built my first working prototype, Quantum Wave.

Further playtesting left me unsatisfied and continued working with it, taking out the parts that didn't work and strengthening parts that did. Some of the leftover game mechanics were used for 2 completely new trading card games. At this point, I renamed Quantum Wave, Cyber Tactics (tm), and now it is part of the De x Maquina universe officially.

Afterwards I invented a card and dice game. It features 60 independent mini-dice games in neat little cards. Then I switched over to inventing board games 2009, one of which is Eivo featured in my Studio Coqui YouTube Channel.

Studio Coqui was not really something I wanted to reveal yet and I wanted to keep H-M Brown as my channel name, but YouTube wouod not recognize the '-' in my name. So I decided to settle with Studio Coqui to maintain some sense of professionalism.

You see one of my goals with these games that I am inventing, is to have them made into video games, my life's true goal. At the time I attended Digipen, it was the only school in North America that genuinely had classes focused on video game design and programming. Today there are a lot of schools that offer such classes, but I feel I fell too far behind everything both financially and agewise (I am genuinely out of touch with today's computer culture) to return.

However, I have continued to look into programming and researching game engines such as Unity. Particularly now that Nintendo has eased their policies regarding publishing games on their 3DS and WiiU systems. In the meantime, I created a LinkedIn account and am following video game companies. I signed up with the International Game Developers Association. And now I am creating vido presentations of my working game prototypes to that these exist and built.

So during this hiatus I will be working on another presentation to post on YouTube. I haven't decided yet which game, nor will I make any 'NEWS and NOTES' about it so I can take my time making it.

So that is basically my situation. This is where I truly come from. I am more of a game inventor than writer. However being a writer is great because a lot of games tell stories. The years that I have practiced and published short stories and novels have really helped hone storytelling skills for many games.

Well that's all I have on my mind. Thank you all for listening to my looong rants. The links to my YouTube page is at the top. Prototype Presentations-Eivo is up and running. I will see you all in May. Enjoy your April Spring.

Until Next Time...
See Ya...

Weekly Rants: March 20, 2013

Greetings Fellow Readers! Welcome to another round of random ranting.

My hiatus is coming up and writing will be coming to a stand still. The question is why? Well, if you've read on my Twitter profile, it says that I am a card/board game inventor. And that is true. I have been inventing card and board games since 2004. The only reason I haven't said much about to this point was because no one would believe me. Think about, what is the first question you would say if I said I made a board game...

"Let me see it."

But the problem lies in Copyrights. Games have been the center of issues involving IPs and piracy. I had to make there was a good tight security and confidence before I can genuinely showcase my games here on the internet. Remember I am posting fiction stories here, and those can be easily stolen at any time.

So what is the hiatus about, well, this morning I posted up a video called Prototype Presentations on YoutTube. My YouTube Channel is called StudioCoqui. No I am not a company, yet, but Google would not allow me to us H-MBrown as the Channel name, so I chose Studio Coqui to sound professional. It will be there that I will post videos of my invented Board and Card Games. Today's Presentation is Eivo, a Board Game designed to be developer friendly into a Video Game. This is the key part here, I am trying not only to get a board game published by a Board Game Company, but I am also looking to get my games made into a Video Game.

The difficulty of making these videos are very high, which is I chose to go to hiatus, so I can focus on making these videos. Juggling writing and video making... and game making, is very taxing on the mind and body. Making my first Prototype Presentation really hard, but I got it down and you can all see what I have been inventing.

There is no scheduling involved, so the videos will be posted unexpectedly. Hence why no 'NEWS and NOTES' during the hiatus. Same goes for the 'Weekly Rants' in April.

Next week's final 'Weekly Rants' before the hiatus, if my computer doesn't break down and sent to the garbage, I will talk a little about myself on how I came to invent games.

Thank you all for listening to my rants.

Until next time...
See ya.

Weekly Rants: March 13, 2013

Greetings Fellow Readers! Welcome to another round of random ranting.

We've finally reach the last chapter of 'Arcana Magi Pure'. I hope you all enjoyed it. It was really fun writing for you all. After this week, I will be going on hiatus fr the rest of March and early April. Have to hit the recharge button and get my brain working on other things. So what will be on tap for Spring?

I will write a new Short Story on Fictionaut. Don't know what it is yet, and it will probably be the only one this Spring, still thinking about it.

I will be working 'The Impossible Man'. I am thinking of bring it over to Kindle, which means doing some improvements over the Fictionaut release, like restoring scenes removed due to wall of text on Fictionaut. I'll get it to work.

Of course there will be more Free 'Shell' Fridays, so that list will arrive after the reset.

Weekly Rants will continue for the rest of March then it will go into the April break.

Now during this writing hiatus, there some projects that I have put off and I want to work on them ASAP, it will involve You Tube, and as soon as I get it all together, I will post up dates.

Next Monday will be the last 'NEWS and NOTES' for March and April.

Yes this is going to be pretty much a slow late March and month of April. Officially I will return in May, but if I do return early, you will know when I post up 'NEWS and NOTES'.

So thank you all for joining me this Winter for 'Arcana Magi Pure Vol.3'. I look forward to seeing all Arcana Magi Fans in October for the Official 'Arcana Magi 2013' season on Fictionaut. Now both 'Memorial' and 'Pure' are at Volume 4 each.

Next Wednesday will be another round of ranting. I let you all know in 'NEWS and NOTES' next week what the next discussion will be.

Until Next Time...

See ya.

Weekly Rants: March 6, 2013

Greetings Fellow Readers! Welcome to another round of random ranting. This I another 'Thought on Writing'. This will probably be brief, so let us begin.

[Thoughts on Writing: Passive Voice

Passive Voice is kind of a polarizing form of grammar. From my experience, I heard on one side that it is very bad grammar and to never use it, while on the other side, I heard it was okay if used correctly. I'm not the type of person that can comprehend things so easily, but in my early writings, they were chock full of passive voice. For me it sounded okay, but then when you're writer everything looks and sounds okay. But once other people read it, they can feel the irritation of passive voice and say its wrong. Now, when I joined WebFictionGuide.com I as criticized for the passive voice, so I made adjustments by removing all passive voice, only to be told that I didn't need to get rid of passive voice altogether. Now that felt irritating.
So what was I to do? I decided to go for a middle ground. I learned that passive voice was good for foreshadowing since passive voice can be vague and not strong enough. So what I have been trying to do in all of current writings is try to set up a foreshadow using passive voice. Now whether it works or not lays in your hands fellow readers, but if passive voice proves effective in foreshadowing, then I will keep using passive voice.
I think that sometimes passive voice, if used in the right place, can be a correct move to make, especially if it serves the story well. If it can keep readers interested in reading more, if it can make reveals more shocking, or if it can define the entire story, then passive voice should be so easily and readily dismissed. But ONLY if you can passive voice work in the story's favor, or else, it would be best to steer clear of it altogether.]

So that was what I had on mind today. Not much, very short and simple.

Thank you all for listening to my brief ranting. Join me again next Wednesday for more rants.

Until Next Time...
See ya.

Weekly Rants: February 27, 2013

Greetings Fellow readers! Welcome to another round of Weekly Ranting. This week is the conclusion of 'Arcana Magi Behind the Scenes - The Four Universes'. Now that you got to know a little about teh Four Gods, it's now time to tell you how I shaped out the Four Universes.

[Arcana Magi Behind the Scenes – The Four Universes Part 2: The Elemental Wheel

The Elemental Wheel is not entirely new. This is actually something featured in games be it Video or Trading Cards. Basically the idea is that elements would be stronger to one element and weaker to others. I now I know that sounds weird because this is not games but literature. How does this work? For this it is quite simple. Remember last week how the Four Gods reside in four different directions, that made it easy for the Element Wheel to work. To put it simply, Seiryu to the east and Byakko to the west oppose each other and Suzaku to the South and Genbu to the North oppose each other. In fact this was the first image I posted up in Fictionaut when I first created the 'Arcana Magi Universe' Group Section.

This was made for 'Arcana Magi' Main Series which featured the Sentinels. This is the actual origin to how the layout works. In the Main Series, the idea as to have Alysia, Chisame, Brie, and Danica both oppose and aligned with each based on the Element they represented and along with it their personalities and traits. Eventually, I expanded this into the Universe itself by applying the concept to the stories themselves. Basically each Universe has it's own destinctiveness from its opposing Element and shares traits with other Elements.
Here is the Walkthrough, please use the image above as guide to see where everything lies. Please NOTE that writing Four Universes is difficult to upkeep and what originally intended could contradict. I will always do my best to keep up my own rules to assure that all of you will enjoy 'Arcana Magi' to its fullest. Also in this walkthrough, I will scarcely use characters names due to the fact that I can add more stories to each Universe in continuity, hence why there are 2 different stories in 3 universes.

            Suzaku Universe - Arcana Magi

The Suzaku Universe is influence by the fire element, hence why the main character casts Fire Spells. Fire is an uncontrolled and unpredictable element, and not even so much an element by science standards, but it does have a sense mysticism. But fire is not something that can be contained in a sense nor suppressed. It burns but provides warmth and protection. One could say that fire itself is innocent since it's formed against its will. It never asked to be fire, and yet there are people who try to harness and weaponize it without any understanding of the repercussions that come with it.

Byakko Universe - Arcana Magi Rush, Arcana Magi Divine

The Byakko Universe is influence by the earth/metal element. Since technology is made from the earth and metal, this universe utilizes such things to its fullest. It is also a slow universe, and I use the word 'slow' very strongly as the universe progresses storywise. Earth is a patient element and metal is one that tends to represent 'might' in most Fantasy stories. It is also land based and even though I haven't wrote enough in this universe, only 2 Short Stories, when this universe becomes fully realized, it should captivate the imagination of the journey and the wondrous world, if it had not done so already.

Genbu Universe - Arcana Magi Memorial, Arcana Magi Cross

The Genbu Universe is influenced by the water element plays on the concept of knowledge, wisdom and the unknown. Water is known to help with healing and has the ability to become anything. It is adaptable, and can be unpredictable. It can even nurtured those in need. People will take the time to learn and understand whatever peaked their curiosity. It can even be aggressive if people push it too far.

Seiryu Universe -  Arcana Magi Zero, Arcana Magi Pure

The Seiryu Universe is influenced by the wind and wood. Wind invokes philosophies and thought. Nature is its ally and spirituality is carried by words through the air. Nature is most aggressive in maintaining the purity of life trying to avoid any changes that is forced upon it. Wind itself has the ability to move around spaces and change its movement at a moments whim. It can also promote growth for all of life, how do think some pollen get around the world?

Yeah so I got a little flowery, but now the comes the fun part. How are they all connected? If you haven't read all of them, I really encourage you all to do so, the universes do share things but when they oppose each other. I could go through the whole the list, but what's the fun in that. This is where you can all get overanalytical and find the similarities and differences. However, I will throw a few examples so you can get an idea of where I am going with the Four Universes. WARNING there will be SPOILERS, so again if you have not read anything, read them now.

          Suzaku Universe <--> Genbu Universe:

It does come off obvious that Fire and Water oppose each other, but to make it easy on all of you, here's one that makes them different; In the Suzaku Universe the earth knew nothing about the Magi or that Merydia exists and now they are outraged at the end of the story. However, in the Genbu Universe, everyone knows about the Magi and Merydia and everything co-exists, hence Ciel coming from France and having diplomatic immunity.

          Seiryu Universe<--->Byakko Universe:

Here is something that should be obvious by now, Seiryu Universe has no robots, but technology reigns supreme in Byakko Universe. There is no magical technology in the Seiryu Universe unlike Byakko. This is more a nature versus technology thing. The Mana rules also stand out in that in Seiryu Universe there is a spiritual sense while in the Byakko Universe does not as seen in Rush. You can go ahead and write out your own theory of what's going in the Byakko Universe until I write more stories for that universe in the meantime.

Now that you have an idea of how the opposing universe work, now it's time to talk about the Allied Universes. Basically 3 Universe allied with each and share a common things, like areas, people, themes, rules, and so on. I won't get into too much detail because again, SPOILERS. This will be in the form of list rather than explanations. It should be self explanatory.

Merydia: Byakko Universe, Suzaku Universe, and Genbu Universe

Madam Karyn Mayweather: Seiryu Universe, Suzaku Universe, and Genbu Universe

Unstable Mana: Genbu Universe, Byakko Universe, and Seiryu Universe

Teams/Clans: Suzaku Universe, Byakko Universe, and Seiryu Universe

That's the Four Universes in a nutshell. I want all of you to read all the stories and write your own articles of what is in these universes and over-analyze the heck out of them. Remember to have fun when you're exploring the Four Universes.]

Thank you all for joining me this week and listening to my rants. Next Week is March which mean 'Thoughts on Writing' will be back. Looking forward to seeing you all.

Until Next Time...
See Ya.
